Difference between a laminated motorcycle jacket and a jacket with a waterproof membrane

When you have a laminated motorcycle jacket, water is repelled from the jacket, so to speak. That's ideal! A motorcycle jacket with only a waterproof membrane will only prevent water from seeping through to your undergarments, but it will not repel water. The outer layer of the jacket will absorb all the water, making the jacket heavy and difficult to dry.

There is also a limit to the amount of water the outer layer can absorb. If the outer layer has absorbed the maximum amount of water, there is an increasing chance that the remaining water will end up on the pants or even, if it rains really hard, in your shoes.
